Huntsville Engine & Performance Customer Spotlight - Mike & Timmy Smith The team at Huntsville Engine & Performance Center will be honoring several of it’s successful drag racing customers with monthly spotlight features that can be found here on DragRaceResults.com throughout 2011. The first HEPC Customer Spotlight will shine on Mike and Timmy Smith, a father & son racing team from Roanoke, AL. Mike and Timmy have earned a reputation as two of the most successful racers in the Southeast, and their accomplishments have gained national attention. Mike Smith, 47, is viewed by many as a legend of the sport, having been at the forefront of the big dollar bracket racing boom as it swept through the Southeast in the 1990’s. Mike began racing at just 15 years of age behind the wheel of his aptly named “Smitty’s Toy” 1969 Nova. In 1989 he purchased the car that most associate his success with, the families familiar ’71 Vega Station Wagon (Yes, they still own the Vega). That season, he earned the NHRA Division 2 E.T. Finals Super Pro crown and won the Division 2 Race of Champions, completing one of the few clean sweeps in E.T. Finals history. He backed up that performance by winning the Super Pro category again in 1991. In years since, Mike Smith has compiled a myriad of victories at big dollar bracket events throughout the Southeastern United States. Currently, Mike competes in a 2007 American Race Cars Dragster equipped with a 615 cubic inch Big Block Chevrolet from Huntsville Engine & Performance. The engine features a BRODIX aluminum block, Callies crankshaft, Oliver connecting rods, Comp Cams camshaft, Dart Big Chief 18* cylinder heads, JE pistons, Jesel valvetrain and belt drive, a Williams aluminum oil pan, and a Pro Systems gas carburetor. Mike puts his Huntsville power to the ground with Mickey Thompson tires thru a Transmission Specialties powerglide and a converter from Paul Yeager. His combination is rounded out by a variety of products from JEGS Mail Order. Mike’s son Timmy Smith has been a staple at race tracks throughout the Southeast for as long as either can remember. Timmy took the wheel of the family Vega Wagon himself in 2001 and began accumulating victories immediately. That season he earned a double victory, winning both Pro and Footbrake, on the same day at a race in Valdosta, GA. Smith picked up a $3,000 triumph at Atlanta Dragway a season later, and continued the family tradition with a Division 2 Championship of his own in 2005, as he won the High School crown at the E.T. Finals. In recent seasons, Timmy has earned no less than eight $10,000 victories highlighted by back-to-back final round appearances (a win and a runner-up) at the Bradenton 5-Day Championships in 2007. Timmy Smith currently drives a 2007 American Race Cars dragster powered by a Huntsville Engine 555 cubic inch engine. That motor features BRODIX -3Xtra cylinder heads, Jesel rocker arms and belt drive, a Callies crankshaft and connecting rods, JE pistons, Moroso oil pan and pump kit, a Dart iron block, BRODIX intake manifold, and Comp Cams camshaft. Like Mike, Timmy utilizes a Transmission Specialties powerglide, Paul Yeager converter, and Mickey Thompson Tires, rounding out the package with products from JEGS. The Smith family enjoyed a stellar 2010 campaign, as the father/son duo appeared in several big dollar final rounds. Mike Smith kicked the season off with a $5,000 victory at the opening Super 7 Series event at Montgomery Motorsports Park. Timmy had a red-hot September, as he opened the month with back-to-back final round appearances at the final Super 7 Series event of the season. There, we was runner-up in a $5,000-to-win event on September 5, and returned to the final round, winning a $10,000 event on September 6. A week later, he made the tow to Gulfport Dragway for the Ultimate Sportsman Shootout and claimed another runner-up finish in the event’s $5,000-to-win race. Timmy finished the season with a $5,000 windfall at Montgomery Motorsports Park’s Ultimate Super Pro Classic in late October. The Smiths own and operate Smith’s Auto Salvage in Roanoke, AL. The business specializes in late model wrecks and parts. They can be reached at 334-863-6384. Huntsville Engine and Performance is proud to have fantastic customers like the Smith family and is honored to have the opportunity to highlight their achievements here on DragRaceResults.com. HEPC would like to thank the Smith family, and all of their valued customers for their continued business and patronage.
