I have a 498 C.I. BBC with 93 1/8 mi passes, from the very beginning I noticed very fine metal on the drain plug - my engine builder & friends said "No Big Deal, Go Racing". But as stubborn as I am we tore the engine down - this engine has a Moldex Steel Crank, Crowder Rods, Veniola Dome Pistons. #7 rod bearing was spun, the rest of the rod bearings had some scuffing -I carried all this to my engine builder, he said the reason for this was because after the engine set for a week or longer I should pull the spark plugs out & turn the motor over until oil pressure came up on my gauge - he said the reason for this was because I had 14.3 to 1 compression & he also said an accumulator would help. Has anyone ever heard of this on a high compression motor.
As far as knowing the rod clearance we did not check ourselves - we took the word of the machine shop who clearanced all bearings - as far as motor oil we broke motor in with 20/50 Valvoline - then changed over to 15/50 Mobile One Syn.

Your engine man is trying to blow smoke up someone's azz.....'fo sho 'nuff.

A single rod bearing failure is due to either a rod out of round at assembly or damaged "in use", Possibly an issue with the bearing installation on that rod or a piece of junk passing through it, improper torque or bolt failure, or lack of lube which is obvious by the amount of heat generated.

Bearings are not an issue because of compression ratio, or all of 'em would be failed. Detonation or other mechanical interference could possible show up on one bearing, but not likely.

I'm 15 to 1 on my smallblock stuff and see bearings come out like new after 700+ passes on a 6500 trap RPM target.

Oh yeah, the late, great Randy Dorton said to quit with the cranking the engine to get oil pressure, you do more damage slow cranking dry than if you just fire it up and get the oil flying quick.

Sounds like the engine wasn't properly cleaned for assembly to me, since you have some scuffing.
You'll need to look at some failure pics to see if possibly it's a clearance issue wiping the bearings.

Go to the Clevite tech pages on the web and find the failure analysis pictures.

Alky can/will wipe King bearings for instance, and certain other alloy coated bearings, and I can see where a set of the standard triple layer bearings could fail, but not from compression alone or failure to prime the oil system before startup.

If running alky you want Clevite "H Series" unplated race bearings, if you run gasoline you want King Alecular series bearings.
I prefer break in on 5w30 or 10w30 Valoline mineral oils, and 10w30 full synthetic or blend after break in, but would run 15w50 Mobil with confidence in a big cube engine.

Can you post of pic of your best and worst bearing?
How about the mains?
