BROWN GETS BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM HIS FRIENDS
BRISTOL, Tenn. (Monday, April 13, 2009)- Barry Brown of Blountville relied on his friends to pick up the first win in the newly-formed DER Racing Series, while a host of other drivers also visited the Winner’s Circle on Saturday at Bristol Dragway. His friends may want to rethink their generosity the next time Brown comes calling. After his own dragster broke during time trials, Brown drove a borrowed dragster to the Super Pro win over a red-lighting Allen Byrd. Kingsport’s Byrd left the line .005 sec. too soon, handing the win to his opponent. Brown left the line with a .048 reaction time and finished his jaunt down the track in 4.684 seconds (4.70 dial-in) at 147.86 mph. It was a good day to be a Blountville native, as Lynn Welch took her 1991 Mustang to the Pro Division win against Justin Horton of Rogersville. Welch used a .043 R.T. and a 7.292 elapsed time (7.25 dial-in) to oust Horton who ran faster than his dial, 6.797 E.T. on a 6.80 dial-in. John Nelson Jr. made the short tow back to Bluff City more enjoyable by picking up the win in the Street Division. Nelson completed his run in 12.703 seconds at 112.58 mph after springing from the line with a .019 R.T. Matthew Hicks of Bristol, Va. earned runner-up honors. Junior Houston from Newland, N.C. won the 6.50 Index class by running a 6.522 E.T. at 105.90 mph. Kingsport’s Van Greer claimed the 7.50 Index after his pass of 7.513 seconds at 89.49 mph. Steve Horgash of Gray defeated Bluff City’s Jerry Turner in two wheel action. Horgash rode his 2005 Suzuki to the win after Turner turned on the red light. The victor reacted with a .105 R.T. and ran a 6.267 E.T. at 115.37 mph. Landon Stahl from Boone, N.C. won Junior Dragster Division I over Lexi Dixon of Abingdon, Va. Jr. Dragster Division II honors went to Roan Mountain’s Jonathan Hill. Hill defeated Dane Shingult from Hillsville, Va. in the final round. The DER Racing Series returns to Bristol Dragway with two days of racing this weekend. Gates open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, with time trials at Noon. Gates open at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Church services begin at 9:30 a.m., while time trials roll off at 10:30 a.m. Spectator admission is $10.
